Budwig Diet

The Budwig Protocol, created by Johanna Budwig, is a nutritional therapy built around restoring essential fatty acid balance and oxygenating the cells, i.e.  improving cellular respiration.

The Conditions the Diet was Designed to Treat

  • Arthritis / rheumatic conditions
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Chronic fatigue / low vitality
  • Degenerative diseases
  • Diabetes
  • Inferility
  • Gastric ulcers
  • General metabolic dysfunction
  • Immune weakness
  • Liver disorders
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS). A recent development is Overcoming MS  Program which is based on scientific evidence, it has been developed specifically for multiple sclerosis and gives a lot of support to people with the condition. If you have any autoimmune condition, you could find Overcoming MS a better option.
  • Skin diseases (e.g., eczema, psoriasis)

Central Therapeutic Element (Non-negotiable)

Flaxseed oil + quark (or cottage cheese) blended into a completely smooth emulsion.

Typical ratio (classic guidance):

  • ~3 tbsp cold-pressed flaxseed oil

  • ~6 tbsp quark,  low-fat cottage cheese or fat-free Greek yoghurt. The actual variety of dairy isn’t important so long as it is approximately 10% protein and ideally, fat-free.

  • 2 tablespoons freshly ground flaxseed.  Freshly ground was recommended by Johanna Budwig, this is an  excellent habit to get into but if you can buy freshly milled qood quality flaxseed that is a good subst

Blend until no free oil is visible.

Budwig considered this emulsification essential, not optional.

Mandatory Dietary Rules (Traditional)

Budwig’s original writings were highly prescriptive:

Allowed / Emphasised

  • Budwig oil-protein mixture daily

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

  • Freshly ground flaxseed

  • Whole foods

  • Natural fats (butter in small amounts sometimes allowed)

Strictly Avoided

  • All refined sugars

  • White flour

  • Processed foods

  • Preserved / chemically treated foods

  • Hydrogenated fats / margarine

  • Pork products

  • Industrial seed oils

  • Artificial additives

Preparation Rules

  • Flaxseed oil must be fresh, refrigerated, never heated

  • Flaxseeds freshly ground

  • Mixture blended, not stirred

  • Consume promptly (avoid oxidation)

Intended Purpose

Budwig proposed the protocol as support for:

  • Cellular function

  • Oxygen uptake

  • Chronic disease recovery (including cancer in her claims)

Budwig Protocol — Non-Dietary Elements (Traditional Teachings)

Beyond food, Johanna Budwig described several lifestyle and environmental practices she considered integral to the protocol.

Sunlight / Light Exposure

  • Daily exposure to natural sunlight

  • Budwig associated light with cellular energy and oxygen utilisation

🚶 Fresh Air & Gentle Activity

  • Regular time outdoors

  • Moderate movement such as walking

  • Emphasis on improving oxygen supply

🧘 Stress Reduction

  • Avoidance of chronic stress

  • Calm mental state viewed as supportive of healing

😴 Rest & Sleep

  • Adequate sleep

  • Recovery seen as essential for regeneration

⚖️ Balance & Natural Living

Budwig encouraged:

  • Minimising chemical exposures

  • Avoiding synthetic substances

  • Living “in harmony with nature”

🧴 Skin & Body Care (Occasionally Mentioned)

  • Natural products preferred

  • Avoidance of petrochemical cosmetics in some writings

Important Modern Perspective

Scientific Perspective

  • Remains controversial

  • Limited clinical validation

  • Regarded today as a complementary dietary approach, not evidence-based medical therapy
